Alaska coast hit by 7.5 magnitude earthquake – tsunami warning issued.
The 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck south-east off the coast of the city of Sand Point in Alaska. The tsunami warning is in place from Kennedy Entrance to Unimak Pass in the US state.
A 7.5 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Alaska – with a tsunami warning also issued.
It occurred at a depth of 41km (25 miles), 94km (55 miles) south-east of the city of Sand Point.
The tsunami warning applies from Kennedy Entrance to Unimak Pass.
Residents in the affected areas were sent messages reading: “The National Weather Service has issued a TSUNAMI WARNING.
“A series of powerful waves and strong currents may impact coasts near you.
“You are in danger. Get away from coastal waters. Move to high ground or inland now.
“Keep away from the coast until local officials say it is safe to return.”
The National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area Twitter account posted: “We have not yet heard the status on any tsunami impacts along the western CONUS yet.
“The tsunami warning is currently only for the Alaska Archipelago.
“We will update when more information becomes available.”
The earthquake was revised upwards from an initial 7.4 magnitude.
There have been two aftershocks of measuring higher than magnitude 5, according to the Alaska Earthquake Center.
In 2006, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the Kashmir region, along with Pakistan, India and Afghanistan.
More than 80,000 people were killed and approximately four million were left homeless.
